Prong collars may look intimidating, but it is important not to not judge a book by its cover, and that book being the prong collar.
The truth is a properly fit prong collar is perfectly safe for a dog when used correctly by the trainer (which is you!). It does not, and should not, inflict severe pain or choke the dog in any way. In fact, prong collars are specifically designed to do the opposite. Yes, a prong collar looks fairly intimidating, there is no doubt about that. They can even look downright painful. But looks can be deceiving.
When used properly, the prong collar can actually protect the dog from trachea damage caused by an inexperienced handler or by the dog itself when it pulls on the collar excessively due to excitement or bad behavior.
The prong collar distributes the pull all the way around the neck instead of directly on the throat. The research suggests that the prong collar is the most effective and least dangerous of restraining collars. The prong collar distributes pressure evenly around the neck and requires only a small amount of force for a correction to be made, instead of the large amount of force needed to correct a dog that is a heavy puller.
It is important that the prong is fitted properly to ensure its effectiveness as a training tool. It should be placed high on the dog’s neck, right at the base of the skull and behind the ears. It can be adjusted by adding or removing links. A prong collar that is too loose and droops or falls down on the dog’s neck can actually pinch the dog’s skin and cause discomfort and will not be effective as a training tool (which is what it is intended for).
